Burda Style 7069 – Pencil Skirt View B

7069What I love about Burda Style patterns is that they’re stylish, modern and very affordable which is why I’m on a Burda roll right now 🙂 Ok on with Burda 7069. I made view B in medium weight cotton and cut a size 14.

This pencil skirt is high-waisted with panels on both sides that follow the contours of your body. That was the main draw for me. I find traditional pencil skirts very uncomfortable as the sides are often too narrow with too much depth in the  hips. But not this Burda. This one is made for a woman with shape!

This was a very simple pattern to construct. I had no particular problems apart from my concealed zip not looking too concealed at the top, but I think this was due to the fabric being quite heavyweight. I made a muslin beforehand as I just don’t trust pencil skirts. It’s a good thing I did as the pattern size 14 was too tight around the bottom. Shocker! Not. I knew this would be the case so when I cut my pattern fabric for real  I added an extra 2 cm to the back seam. This worked out just fine.

I decided to top stitch the side panel seams. The instructions say to just press them to the centre and clip the curves but I wasn’t buying that. I figured that I would most likely be wearing this skirt without tights and wouldn’t want any seams rubbing against my thighs. Also I just didn’t believe that the seams would lay down flat as I moved around.

And even after all that I still didn’t think that top stitching would be enough so I added a lining for a guaranteed smooth finish. I sewed it on by hand,  which took a bit of time but was well worth it.

The next time I make this skirt I will shorten the length as the hem tends to ride up when I walk fast. Apart from that there’s nothing else I would change.

In conclusion I would recommend this pattern for all sewing skill levels. It’s easy to sew and easy to wear with a simple T-shirt, vest or silky blouse. Using bright colourful fabrics keeps the style fresh but still sophisticated which is more than enough for me 🙂
